Abdel Malik Ali

I just received the following e-mail:

Dear Jpetitioners!

Sorry to bother -but if this speech from YESTERDAY at UC Irvine is an
example, then it's worth than I thought, and we should speak out. The link
gives you a taste of this Arab guy's rantings - kind of scary and we should
take a moment to take a stand. (apparently it went on for more than an
hour - and the crowd loved it.)

Check out the video briefly at this link:
http://standwithus.com/UCI_incitement2005.asp

and then please SIGN AND PASS ON the petition at this second link. Shortcut
to: http://jpetition.com/petition.php?id=34

Let's get 10,000 signatures and send a real message against this stuff from
happening in our own backyard - or anywhere anymore.

Thanks again.
Sincerely,
www.Jpetiton.com

A few notes:

The reference to "this Arab guy's rantings" seems a bit suspect. "Arab" is used as a derogatory term in this sentence. Why is his ethnic background the issue?

My understanding is that the speaker, Abdel Malik Ali, is not Arab, but African-American.

Abdel Malik Ali spoke at a rally on Sproul Plaza at UC Berkeley on March 8, 1996. That rally was in support of a string of suicide bombings in Israel in which roughly sixty people were killed.

On this video you can hear him supporting bus bombings such as the ones which occured in the two weeks before the March 1996 rally (and much more recently).

The petition calls on "the UC System to banish such hate speech from the campuses permanently." The words spoken on this video clip were indeed hateful. But the actual harm caused is very minimal. No reasonable person watching this speech would think of him as anything but an extremist. Speech codes should be actively opposed, in part because they would be used as a weapon against us, and in part because they are wrong per se.
